MEASUREMENTS

LIQUID OUNCES CONVERTED INTO OTHER MEASUREMENTS

1 teaspoon 5 ml. 100 drops ¼ oz.
2 teaspoons 10 ml.
1 tablespoon 15 ml. 300 drops ½ oz.
2 tablespoons 30 ml.
20 drops 1/3 teaspoon 1ml 1 oz.
40 drops 2/3 teaspoon
1 dram 4 ml.
5/8 dram 1 ¾ ml.

Depending on the consistency of the oils the drops per ml. will vary. The essential oils are both thin and light weight or thick and heavy weight. Patchouli weighs more in less space than Tea-tree.

WHEN USING THE ESSENTIAL OILS ALWAYS DILUTE THEM.

1 drop of an essential oil will not go far, but using a vegetable oil the essential oil will cover a larger area as well as reducing the risk of having a sensitive reaction.

SUGGESTED GUIDELINES FOR DILUTING ESSENTIAL OILS:

MIN. – MAX. DROPS OF E.O. MEASURE OF BASE OILS

0 - 1                      1/3 TEASPOON

2 - 5                          1 TEASPOON

4 - 10                       2 TEASPOON

6 - 15                  1 TABLESPOON

8 - 20                        4 TEASPOON

10 - 25                     5 TEASPOON

12 - 30                2 TABLESPOON

NEVER USE ESSENTIAL OILS INTERNALLY OR NEAT ON BABIES OR CHILDREN

NEWBORN:        1-3 DROPS           INTO 1 OZ. BASE OIL

2-12 MONTHS 3-5 DROPS          INTO 1 OZ. BASE OIL

5-12 YEARS         5-15 DROPS INTO 1 OZ. BASE OIL

PUBERTY 10-20 DROPS          INTO 1 OZ. BASE OIL

SCENT BLENDING

When a scent has a question mark beside it, it indicates that some authority has placed it in that category, but my experience, as well as other sources, contradict it. (Especially when the same scent appears as all three notes!) However, it is not unusual for a specific scent to fill two adjacent functions, depending on the other oils in the blend.

HERBAL INCENSE

Yes, you CAN make your own incense!

Materials needed:

2 tablespoon gum tragacanth---this ignites the incense

    1 tablespoon gum benzoin

1 tablespoon charcoal--buy the capsules and open them up or buy incense charcoal and powder it yourself--charcoal keeps it burning

1 teaspoon potassium nitrate (also called saltpeter)

1 teaspoon essential oils-can mix if you like-your choice

    4 tablespoons water

Mix all the powers together, add essential oils and enough water to make a paste. Form this paste into small cones or wrap a lavender twig with the paste, or a small stick of some sort. Set aside to dry for a few days on a piece of wax paper. Later, wrap in a circuliar piece of netting and tie with a ribbon and add to a herbal gift basket!

Selecting A Massage Oil

Almost any vegetable oil act as a good carrier oil, but here are some helpful hints.

The average adult body will require about 20ml (1 tablespoon ) of massage oil. Firstly, consider how long you want to massage for. A thicker oil (almond or apricot ) will last longer than a thinner oil (soya been or canola ). If there are sore muscles involved, you will want to massage for longer.

  • For a facial massage, you only need about 5ml (1 teaspoon ), and you can use a richer oil such as jojobas, apricot or olive oil. Jojoba is a wonderful skin care product on its own, but can be enhanced considerably by adding an appropriate essential oil. However, due to it's viscosity ( thickness ) it is not recommended for body massage. Jojoba is a liquid wax which gives it the added benefit of not going rancid over time.

  • Choose a base oil with little or no aroma that will not mask the smell of the essential oils.

  • Mineral oils ( such as baby oil ) are unsuitable as they are very effective barriers - they keep moisture out which will significantly inhibit both the absorption and the skin action of the essential oils.
